Cherisa alford

Cherisa Alford is from St. Kitts W.I and migrated to the U.S at the tender of age fifteen. Receiving a journal as a Christmas gift is where her journey as a writer began.
The journal was a great place to express her frustrations, her dreams, poems, even songs. It was not until 2010, Cherisa was exposed, to the power of open mic poetry, changing the direction of her life. Cherisa also is known as SweetSugarCanethepoet performing wherever she could in the DMV area, Pure Poetry, Busboys and Poets, Spoken World Poetry Tuesday, to name a few. SweetSugarCanethepoet writes pieces that are spiritual, inspiring, and the crowd’s favorite erotic. SweetsSugarCane has been described as “the island girl, bringing the island flavor”.
The poetry community has helped return a voice that now refused to be hushed.
Cherisa Alford has been featured, on radio stations, like WPFW with Tony Carr (2014), Lady Flava, and Melinda Steward on ladyflava.com (January 2015), and WRTR Real Talk Radio with Honey B and Marcus (2015).
On June 26th, 2016, Cherisa Alford published her first nonfiction book called Lately on my bed, followed by Lately on my bed II in 2017. Both books gave her audience a chance to know her intimately, as a writer on a journey of self-discovery.
In 2018, Cherisa teamed up with two friends Melindathewriter and Mackey-Solo, to write a poetry book now published in October 2020. Cherisa looks forward to releasing Lately On my bed III in 2021 and more exciting projects. Cherisa remains optimistic, creative, and determined to inspire those who would hear her speak
